Ella Toone was the star of the show, scoring a stunning hat-trick as Manchester United clinched their first-ever victory at Manchester City in a thrilling derby that was marred by a string of mistakes from City’s young goalkeeper, Khiara Keating.

Despite the blunders, City’s head coach, Gareth Taylor, stood by his goalkeeper, stating, “We win, lose, and draw together as a team. The players in front of her need to do their jobs.” However, it was a tough night for Keating and the entire City defense, who struggled with basic ball distribution and fell to their second consecutive league loss.

The derby lacked the usual star power, with City missing captain Alex Greenwood, England international Lauren Hemp, and top scorer Khadija Shaw, all sidelined due to injury. On the other side, Manchester United’s Geyse was absent after a family loss, but her teammates honored her by holding up her shirt in front of the crowd, chanting her name in solidarity.

While City’s injury list couldn’t account for their chaotic first-half defending, Keating had a particularly tough time. Under constant pressure from United’s high-pressing attack, City’s defense looked vulnerable from the outset. Elisabeth Terland could have put United out of reach early on, but her finishing let her down. Despite a thrilling performance, United manager Marc Skinner was frustrated, insisting his team should have been up by five or six goals at halftime.

The first half saw United take control. Toone opened the scoring with a brilliant finish after a clever flick from Hinata Miyazawa, followed by Leah Galton’s scrappy goal from a corner, despite a hint of offside. Toone then capitalized on a loose pass from Keating to make it 3-0. The match was slipping away from City, but just before the break, a glimmer of hope emerged. Vivianne Miedema, back from injury, nodded in Mary Fowler’s cross, and then Rebecca Knaak scored on debut with a header from another Fowler corner to make it 3-2. Suddenly, the possibility of a comeback seemed real.

However, any hopes of a City resurgence were dashed within 10 seconds of the second half. Keating, under pressure from Terland right from the restart, made another calamitous mistake. Her pass was charged down, allowing Toone to pounce on the loose ball and score her third goal, completing her hat-trick in front of the delighted away fans.

United’s manager, Skinner, couldn’t help but reflect on Toone’s emotional journey, referencing the loss of her father in September and a calf injury that had kept her sidelined for months. “We all know what she’s been through,” Skinner said. “What’s more important now is that she enjoys playing football again, and she’s in a great space to do that.”

For City, the loss means they’ve now dropped three of their last four WSL matches, a far cry from their earlier 23-game unbeaten run. They were also without key winger Chloe Kelly, who was reportedly linked with a loan move to United. Both coaches remained tight-lipped on the matter, but Taylor confirmed Kelly’s absence was due to an ankle injury she picked up during a recent training session.

It was a night to forget for City, but a historic moment for Toone and Manchester United, who will relish the opportunity to build on this landmark win.
