“
Eintracht
Frankfurt's Niko Arnautis on the Thrilling Title
Race and 2025 Ambitions”
As
the winter break approaches, Eintracht Frankfurt finds
itself in an extraordinary position at the top of the
Google Pixel Women’s Bundesliga, surpassing defending
champions FC Bayern Munich and DFB Cup holders VfL
Wolfsburg. For Eintracht’s head coach Niko Arnautis, it’s
been a remarkable first half of the season. In an
interview with DFB.de, Arnautis reflects on his team’s
strong performances, the intense competition for the
league title, and what lies ahead for the 2025 season.
A New Title Contender in 2025?
For
over a decade, the German champions have been either FC
Bayern Munich or VfL Wolfsburg, but Arnautis and his team
have shaken up the status quo this year. When asked if
2025 could be the year that the title race changes hands,
Arnautis is cautiously optimistic. “We wouldn’t mind, of
course,” he laughs. “But it’s still too early to predict.
What we’ve done so far is already something special. The
last time Eintracht was autumn champions was eleven years
ago, so we’re in a strong position."
Eintracht Frankfurt's Strong Performance
After
twelve matchdays, Frankfurt sits atop the table, tied with
Bayern for points. Arnautis is pleased with the team’s
progress but remains focused on their ultimate
goal—qualifying for international competition. “We’ve been
able to challenge the top teams, reduce the gap, and pick
up points in crucial matches. We’re the only team in the
top four still unbeaten in direct encounters. The players
are enjoying their football, and that’s something we want
to continue into the new year.”
With
just three points separating first and fourth place, the
league’s tight race could intensify as the second half of
the season unfolds. Arnautis is ready for what’s to come:
“The start after the winter break will show where we’re
heading. We have some important direct matchups early in
February. It could stay exciting until the final
matchday.”
A Thrilling League for German Women’s Football
The
current standings in the Bundesliga are unprecedented,
with multiple teams vying for the title. Arnautis believes
this unpredictability is fantastic for the league.
“Something like this hasn’t happened in years—possibly
never in this form. It’s great for the league and for
German women’s football. Right now, the Bundesliga is the
most exciting and attractive league in Europe.”
Eintracht’s Impressive Stats and Consistency
Eintracht’s
performance has been nothing short of impressive. The team
has scored the most goals and conceded the fewest, with
Arnautis praising both the team’s attacking and defensive
efforts. “Our possession stats, shots on goal, and passes
are all ahead of the competition. Players like Laura
Freigang and Nicole Anyomi are among the top scorers, and
Sophia Kleinherne and Lisanne Gräwe have been outstanding
in duels. These individual contributions highlight the
overall development of the team.”
Arnautis
attributes the team’s success to their dynamic style of
play and strong teamwork. “We play an exciting brand of
football with passion, power, and consistency. Our squad
is deep, and the players work really well together—that’s
the key to our success.”
The Impact of Missing Champions League
Eintracht’s
failure to reach the group stage of the UEFA Women’s
Champions League was a bitter disappointment, but Arnautis
believes the team’s response helped them grow. “The team
reacted to that disappointment in a mature way. The
frustration turned into positive energy, which has helped
us become stronger as a unit.”
FC Bayern and VfL Wolfsburg’s Champions League Advantage
With
Bayern and Wolfsburg advancing to the Champions League
quarter-finals, some have speculated that this could give
them an advantage in the league. However, Arnautis remains
unfazed: “The Champions League knockout rounds don’t start
until mid-March, so there won’t be any extra pressure on
those teams in the early part of the second half of the
season. Plus, Champions League games can be a challenge
but also a source of motivation for other matches.”
A Tough Loss and the Road Ahead
Eintracht’s
only defeat so far came in a narrow 1-0 loss to SV Werder
Bremen. Arnautis admits that it’s still frustrating, but
he sees it as part of the learning process.
“It was a disappointing result. We had enough quality
chances to win, but a counterattack led to their goal.
It’s a reminder that no match is guaranteed, and every
team in this league has quality.”
Looking
ahead, Arnautis is focused on the remaining challenges.
“The table is so tight that we’ll approach each match with
full concentration. Our main goal is to achieve our
objectives by the end of the 22nd matchday. There’s still
a long way to go.”
Eintracht’s Growing Influence in German Women’s Football
Eintracht
Frankfurt now boasts the largest representation of players
in the German national team, with several of their key
players making an impact on the international stage.
Arnautis is proud of this achievement, noting that the
club is becoming an attractive destination for top talent.
“It’s
amazing to see how far we’ve come. A few years ago, Sophia
Kleinherne was the only Frankfurt player in the national
team. Now, about two-thirds of our squad has represented
Germany at various levels. This shows the good work we’re
doing here.”
DFB Cup Challenge and Transfer Market Plans
Eintracht
will also face FC Bayern Munich in the DFB Cup
quarter-finals, and Arnautis is eager to test his team’s
mettle. “We know it won’t be easy, but we’ve shown in the
past that we can compete with Bayern. We’ve drawn twice
recently and only lost to them in penalties last March.”
As
for the transfer market, Arnautis is mindful of the
squad’s depth, especially following Barbara Dunst’s
long-term injury. “It’s sad to lose Barbara, but we have
faith in our current squad. We’ll consider new signings if
we find someone who can strengthen us for the long term.
We have players like Geraldine Reuteler returning after
the break, and others who are gradually being integrated
into the team.”
A Deep Connection to Eintracht Frankfurt
Arnautis,
a Frankfurt native, has been at the helm of the women’s
team for over seven years. His passion for the club is
evident. “I’ve been an Eintracht fan since I was a child.
Coaching the women’s team is a dream come true, and it
drives me to get the best out of the club.”
A Dream of Title Glory
For
Arnautis, winning the league title with Eintracht would be
a monumental achievement. “It would be very special for me
personally, and a dream come true for the entire club.
Winning titles is our goal, and we’re getting closer every
year.”
Looking Ahead to 2025
As
the team prepares for the second half of the season,
Arnautis’s main wish for 2025 is simple: health.
“Staying healthy is the foundation for everything else.
Only then can we achieve our goals. I also hope we
continue to maintain our strong team spirit and
motivation. If we do that, we’ll stay on track to achieve
our ambitions.”
