DFB overturns ruling
The
result of the Google Pixel Women's Bundesliga match between
SC Freiburg and Bayer 04 Leverkusen, played on August 31,
2024, which ended in a 3-2 victory for Leverkusen, has been
overturned.
The
DFB Sports Court made this ruling in a written procedure
conducted by a single judge, following an appeal by SC
Freiburg, and ordered that the match be rescheduled.
However, on September 19, 2024, Bayer 04 Leverkusen lodged
an appeal against this ruling.
The controversy stems from the 88th minute of the match when a penalty was awarded to Bayer 04 Leverkusen. The initial penalty shot went over the goal, but the referee, after receiving a signal from the assistant referee, ruled that the Freiburg goalkeeper had moved off the goal line before the shot.
As a result, the referee ordered the penalty to be retaken,
and it was successfully converted, securing a 3-2 victory
for Leverkusen. SC Freiburg contested the match result,
arguing that the referee violated the rules by deciding to
retake the penalty.
The
DFB Sports Court initially upheld Freiburg's appeal, citing
Rule 14, Paragraph 2 of the football rulebook, which states
that if the goalkeeper commits an offence during a penalty
and the ball misses the goal, the penalty should only be
retaken if the goalkeeper’s offence "clearly affected the
kicker."
The
court concluded that this rule had not been properly applied
and that the timing and nature of the referee’s decision
could have unfairly influenced the outcome of the match.
Bayer 04 Leverkusen has now appealed the annulment, and the sports court will determine the further course of the proceedings. In the meantime, the match remains nullified, and its rescheduling is pending the outcome of this latest appeal.

"I’ve been following Essen for a while now, and the way they surprised everyone last season was amazing! If they can build on that and keep their young squad together, there’s no reason why they can’t aim for European competition. Kowalski is key to that, no doubt!"

"It’s great to see players like Kowalski being so honest about their strengths and weaknesses. Admitting that body language is something she wants to work on shows a lot of maturity for her age. I hope she gets her chance with the national team soon!"
