Another ACL injury in the game

Wales captain was forced to leave the field

Chelsea midfielder Sophie Ingle has suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury during a pre-season match against Feyenoord, the Women’s Super League champions confirmed on Monday.

The 33-year-old Wales captain was forced to leave the field in the second half of Chelsea's 9-0 victory earlier this month. She is set to undergo surgery following a medical assessment by the club’s team and a knee specialist.

"Sophie will soon undergo surgery before beginning her rehabilitation at the club," Chelsea announced in a statement.

Ingle joins a growing list of high-profile WSL players sidelined by ACL injuries, following Chelsea's Sam Kerr and Manchester City's Jill Roord. ACL injuries have been increasingly common in women’s sports.

Last December, Uefa formed a women’s health expert panel to address the rising number of cases among female athletes. According to global players' union Fifpro, factors like increased workload, travel, and insufficient rest have contributed to the surge in injuries, including torn ACLs, among female professional players.

Chelsea will kick off their WSL campaign against Aston Villa on Friday 20th September 2024.
